St. John Villa and Vacation Rentals

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

I had a nice exchange with Jared and Angie this past week, they own a villa in St. John and needed a little customer support.    Having the abilty to meet new people is one of the great aspects of owning a vacation rental site, for the most part vacation rental owners are a super lot of people.

So since Jared and Angie were so nice, I thought I’d feature their property on this blog.   I have to admit, I have never been to St. John, but their unit looks exceptional. Maybe somebody will comment on what makes St. John unique? What’s the easiest way to get to St. John? Any local secrets or places to eat that anybody would like to share?

Here is a little widget highlighting Jared and Angie’s place, you can click on it to go to the listing on vacationrentaldirect.com.

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I live in North Carolina and it wasn’t until this morning that I’ve ever even heard of Lake Nantahala. It’s way in the southwestern corner of the state, real close to the Smoky Mountains and about an hour from Asheville. Nonetheless this particular property looks incredible, if you are thinking of planning a family reunion or gathering with a bunch of people, check it out.

Holland Michigan Vacation Rentals and Vacation Homes

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I had a new property owner recently add a listing for his cottage in Holland, Michigan. He mentioned that the he has several weeks still available for his Holland Michigan vacation rental cottage. I am personally familiar with the area where his vacation home is located, so I thought I would highlight both this vacation rental and as well as my own Holland Michigan vacation cottages and homes!

The first property is located on the south side of Lake Macatawa in Holland Michigan in a little community called Macatawa. Macatawa is almost all seasonal vacation rentals and features private access to miles of magnificent Lake Michigan beaches on the south side of channel which leads into Lake Macatawa from Lake Michigan. Many families in Holland like to hike to the south beaches because there is no charge, unlike having to pay on the north side of the channel at the Holland State Park. Also there just aren’t many people on the south side beaches because it’s primarily for the use of the Macatawa cottage owners. Big Red is on the south side, which is one of Holland primary historic landmarks. There is a wonderful pier on both the south side and north side of the channel for fishing, walking and swimming. The south side is hardly ever busy, while te north side pier can be very busy.

Top 5 Most Stupid Website Mistakes I See Every Single Stinking Day

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Owning a vacation rental site has its perks. Every day I get the illustrious opportunity to help users upload photos to their listings. No matter how easy I make it, there are always a bunch who just can’t figure it out. The same thing is true for adding a Google Map. Nonetheless I get to review tons and tons of vacation rental websites every week. I would say roughly 50% of them are complete junk, 35% do a good job and 15% are completely amazing.

Here are the 5 most stupid website mistakes that I see very single stinking day.

1. Shrinking a 1mb 1028×764 pixel image into a 100×100 square. To further the offense, they then repeat this for at least 10 images on the same page. The result is a very slow loading page and images that are grainy and distorted. The sad thing is that when I click on “view image” and see the full picture, many times they are great pictures.

2. Image width less then 250 pixels. Hello people….you own a vacation rental, people want to see large images of your unit. Not little thumbnails.

3. Sound. I cannot believe how many people think it’s cute to put up some annoying beach music on their website. 10 years ago this was novel, now it’s extremely annoying. Usually these are the same people that shrink their 1mb images down to 100×100 or smaller.

4. Dark and unclear images. Seriously, why would anybody promote their vacation rental and use dark, dingy, unclear pictures to promote it? You would not believe the number of vacation rental owners that take just horrible pictures and proceed to put them up on their website.

5. and finally my worst pet peeve, are large annoying, myspace like, background images that either repeat themselves across the entire page or are nearly the same color as the text of your website.

It is not at all uncommon to see websites containing all five elements on the same page. To illustrate my point, I am coding a new application that will automatically post the junkiest websites that I come across to this blog. I love my customers and all, but someone has to call them out. Sometimes an intervention is needed.

Social Media Marketing – Part I

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Social Media Marketing is sort of a buzz phrase these days. Social Media as a whole encompasses a variety of sites like or similar to MySpace, FaceBook, Digg, StumbleUpon and there are literally 100s of others. I have a lame myspace profile and an even lamer facebook profile, but in the end, those sites just bored the hell out of me. Why not just call each other or God forbid go meet up somewhere? Hell, I am only 35, but to me MySpace and Facebook seem like a complete fad and waste of time. God gave a real world to explore, why immerse myself in a virtual one?

But my wife got into myspace, so at times, I could sort of see the appeal. But not really. The marketing aspect of myspace and facebook is interesting, but after helping to pioneer embeddable videos and widgets using another site I own, PcPlanets.com, the whole scene just bored me. Which is pretty apparent if you look at the design of PcPlanets.com. The content is updated, but the design is quite dated.

So I’ve been slow to catch on to this whole notion of social media marketing. I’ve never used Digg.com and never bothered with StumbleUpon or Squidoo either, although I’ve seen plenty of mentions of them in the media and on various webmaster forums; but, it just seemed like a waste of time.

When I did finally visit Digg, I totally just took the low road and spammed them with content and articles. Of course that didn’t work. So fast forward another nine months and now I am giving social media marketing another shot, but this time I am going to engage the community only after doing a great deal of research and planning.

Learnings:

1) I need a brand. If I am going to become an active social participant, I need a simple, bold, memorable identity. Which means I need an avatar. After scrolling many of the SU (StumbleUpon) profiles, I found that I investigated the users with best avatars first. In returning, or in visiting other sites, or when just stumbling around, I was able to recall avatars that were clean, bold and identifiable. So it makes sense that if I am to participate online, I need an avatar.

2) I can’t do it alone. My objective is to develop an influencer profile on SU. It’s not going to be easy, it will take months of work. Perhaps I’ll never quite get there, because I am a busy guy. In the end, it is my hope that by really working at contributing to the community and working to network with some of the influencers on SU, that my profile strength will increase and I’ll turn the heads of a few veterans who will DIGG or Stumble some of my stuff.

3) Great content. I’ve got some innovative ideas for blog postings and content relevant to the real estate and vacation rental verticals,as well as some stuff relevant to coding, marketing and rich media. I’ll take my time, work on some solid content, correct grammar and spelling, and overall put out content that has value to others.

In the end, I hope to really focus on writing or obtaining some informative content about regional areas of the world that have high concentrations of vacation rentals. By writing informed material, perhaps sometimes even controversial material, about regional matters, I hope to draw attention, traffic and additional writings from other bloggers, journalists and renters to those areas which in the end will increase my deep internal links, which will increase my search engine rankings.

Thus when it’s all said and done, I will have built up a strong profile filled with like minded individuals with an interest in travel, lodgings and vacation rentals. Hopefully I’ll be stumbling and reviewing other sites daily and submitting some great content for the members of my network to stumble and review. Along the way we’ll all learn a great deal about social media networking, learn a bunch from each other and hopefully drive a ton of long term social media and search engine traffic to our respective sites.

I think it’s going to be a long and hard process. I will publish the results as they come in. Let’s begin.
